Privacy Policy

Last updated: July 11, 2026

This Privacy Policy explains how the Matcha app ("Matcha," "the app," "we," "us," or "our") handles information when you use it. Matcha is operated by Lewis Design, LLC.

Matcha is a collection of matcha recipes with step-by-step tutorials, plus a community "Vote for features" board. We built it to be private by design: it works without an account, it never asks for your name or contact details, and browsing recipes collects nothing. The only information that leaves your device is what you choose to post to the feedback board, which is stored on Apple’s iCloud — and, because that board is public, is visible to other people who use the app.

If you have any questions, contact us at luke@lewisdesign.co.

The short version

• No account. No login. We never ask for your name, email, phone number, or any other identifying information. (Posting and voting use your device’s existing iCloud sign-in — see below — but we never see your Apple ID.)

• Browsing recipes collects nothing. Recipes and tutorials are built into the app; using them sends nothing to us or anyone else.

• The feedback board is public. If you post a feature request or bug report, or vote, that goes to Apple’s iCloud (CloudKit) — and your post is shown to everyone on the board. Don’t put personal or sensitive information in a post.

• Tutorial videos come from YouTube. The how-to clips play through an embedded YouTube player, so Google/YouTube may collect data when you watch one, under their own policies.

• No analytics. No ads. No tracking. We don’t use advertising identifiers, we don’t track you across other apps or websites, and we don’t sell your data.

• You can remove everything the app stores locally by deleting the app.

1. What Matcha is

Matcha is a recipe app for making matcha drinks at home: a set of recipes, step-by-step walkthroughs with optional how-to videos, and a public board where users suggest and vote on features. It has no account system and is not a substitute for professional dietary or health advice.

2. Information stored on your device

Matcha keeps essentially nothing personal on your device. Recipes and tutorial content are bundled into the app itself. The app doesn’t ask you to create a profile, save personal notes, or enter personal information. Ordinary app preferences (such as a timestamp used to space out feedback posts) are stored locally and are not uploaded to us. Deleting the app removes anything it stored locally.

3. The feedback board (Apple iCloud / CloudKit — public)

Matcha includes a "Vote for features" board where people post feature requests and bug reports and upvote each other’s posts. This is the only part of the app that sends anything off your device, and it uses Apple CloudKit (part of iCloud) as its backend. We do not run our own server, and no third party other than Apple is involved in storing it.

When you post a submission, the following is stored in CloudKit and shown publicly on the board to everyone who uses the app:

• The content you type (subject and details), and

• The category you select (feature request or bug report).

Because the board is public, please do not include any personal, identifying, sensitive, or health information in a post. Treat anything you post as visible to everyone.

When you vote on a post, the app stores a small vote record containing the item you voted on and a per-user identifier provided by iCloud. This lets the app prevent duplicate votes and show which items you’ve already voted on. The app displays only total vote counts, never who voted.

About the identifier: it is assigned by Apple/iCloud and is unique to you within this app. It is associated with the posts and votes you submit, but it is not your name, email, or Apple ID — we never receive any of those. Posting or voting requires you to be signed in to iCloud on your device; simply reading the board does not.

Posts are automatically screened for offensive language and rate-limited to reduce spam. Apple stores and processes this data on its iCloud infrastructure under Apple’s privacy policy: https://www.apple.com/legal/privacy/

4. Tutorial videos (YouTube)

Some recipe tutorials include an optional how-to video. These videos are hosted on YouTube and play inside an embedded player within the app. When you open one, YouTube/Google may receive your IP address, set cookies or similar identifiers, and collect information about your interaction with the video, under Google’s Privacy Policy (https://policies.google.com/privacy) and YouTube’s terms. We don’t receive this information, and no video plays unless you choose to open it.

5. Information we do not collect

To be clear about what we don’t do:

• We don’t collect your name, email, phone number, or Apple ID.

• We don’t use product or usage analytics, and we don’t record your screen.

• We don’t use Apple’s advertising identifier (IDFA), we don’t serve ads, and we don’t ask to track you across other companies’ apps or websites. The app’s privacy settings declare "no tracking."

• We don’t sell or rent your information, and we don’t share data with data brokers.

6. How information is used

We use the limited information described above only to:

• Provide the app’s features (including the public feedback board);

• Review feature requests and bug reports so we can improve the app and fix problems; and

• Comply with legal obligations.

We do not use your information to advertise to you, to build a marketing profile, or to sell to anyone.

7. Who we share information with

We do not sell or rent your information, and we do not operate our own servers. Data reaches only:

• Apple — delivers the app and, through the App Store, would handle any future in-app purchases (we never see payment details); and Apple’s iCloud / CloudKit stores the public board’s posts, categories, votes, and the per-user iCloud identifier described in Section 3. Apple’s privacy policy: https://www.apple.com/legal/privacy/

• Google / YouTube — only if you choose to play a tutorial video, as described in Section 4.

We may also disclose information if we are legally required to (for example, in response to a valid legal request). We don’t share data with advertising networks, analytics providers, or data brokers.

8. How long we keep information

• Anything stored locally on your device stays until you delete the app.

• Posts and votes stored in iCloud/CloudKit are retained for as long as they’re useful to the board and the app, or as required for legal or operational reasons. They are associated only with a per-user iCloud identifier, not your name or contact details.

9. Your choices and rights

Because Matcha collects no identifying information and keeps almost nothing on your device, you are largely in direct control:

• Delete local data: delete the app to remove anything it stored on your device.

• Remove a post: posts are tied only to a per-user iCloud identifier with no name attached, so we may be unable to locate a specific one. If you’d like us to try to remove something you posted, email luke@lewisdesign.co and describe it; we’ll make reasonable efforts to help.

Depending on where you live, you may have additional rights under laws such as the EU/UK GDPR or the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA/CPRA) — including the right to access, correct, delete, or port your data, and the right not to be discriminated against for exercising them. We do not sell or "share" personal information as those laws define it. To make a request, email luke@lewisdesign.co. (Because we don’t collect identifying information, we may be unable to associate a stored record with a specific person.)

10. Children’s privacy

Matcha is intended for a general audience and is not directed to children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. Because the feedback board is public, younger users should have a parent’s guidance. If you believe a child has posted personal information, contact us and we’ll help remove it.

11. International users

The feedback data described here is stored and processed by Apple on its iCloud infrastructure, which may include data centers in the United States and other countries. Data-protection laws there may differ from those where you live. By using Matcha, you understand that this limited information may be processed in those locations, subject to the protections described in this policy and Apple’s own safeguards.

12. Security

We design the app to minimize risk: there’s no account to be stolen, browsing collects nothing, and the only off-device data is what you choose to post to the public board (stored in Apple’s iCloud). No method of storage or transmission is ever 100% secure, but we keep our data footprint deliberately small to limit exposure.

13. Changes to this policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we’ll change the "Last updated" date above, and for significant changes we’ll provide a more prominent notice in the app or on this page. Your continued use of Matcha after an update means you accept the revised policy.
